We make car loans.  You make memories. I’ve had several memorable cars, this story is about my first “good” car.  I bought it used from a dealer in El Dorado, I was 20 and it was only one year old in 1958.  I was a single guy attending the old El Dorado Jr. College and working as a jailer/dispatcher for the County Sheriff’s Office.  I couldn’t believe I was able to drive this beautiful all black ‘57 Chevy 283 stick shift.  I added lowering blocks (to the rear back then) and fender skirts to enhance the overall good looks and performance.  I loved that car and named it Julie after a popular song at the time. Julie and I, later in 1959, married Glenis, making Julie play second fiddle to my new girl, but we all still went to Paul’s Valley, Oklahoma, together on our honeymoon.  Needless to say, Julie entered fewer street races after that.    In May of 1961, our first son was born and life’s more important things had to be faced.  No money and a large (I thought) hospital bill was due before I could bring my wife and new son home.  Julie had to go.  She was replaced by an old ’51 Chevy and a paid hospital bill.  All things considered, a very good trade.   Jim Pennington   Way back in 1978 my boyfriend (now my husband) and I were out riding in his Corvette convertible.  It was a beautiful spring day.  My long blonde hair was blowing all over. We were young and tanned and loving it. Everything was perfect until we had to stop at the light in front of the meat packing plant.  I don't know if he was holding his breath or pretending it didn't smell, but he sat there unfazed.  Looking cool while the lunch crowd crossed the street.  Until he looked over at me.  I had pulled the neck of my shirt clear up under my eyes.  Jeanne Mehl My husband and I were at a wedding reception at Botanica in Wichita.  It was about 1 a.m. when we decided to leave for home.  Unfortunately our car wouldn't start; turned the key and nothing!  There happened to be some guys at the wedding who thought they could figure it out, but no luck!  So, we called a tow truck and they towed our SUV all the way to Augusta.  Only problem with that was that there wasn't enough room in the cab of the tow truck for the driver, my husband and me, AND the driver's girlfriend (who was too scared to stay at home alone that late at night by herself!).  So, my husband had to ride in our SUV on the back of the tow truck!  Oh my gosh, what a ride that was!  Poor guy.  The next day, we found out that the battery cable was loose and simply needed tightened.   What a memory! Terri Colby My first car was a '56 Chevy, which I bought (if I remember correctly) in 1963 for $250.00 when I was 18.  It was a "lovely" chartruse, black and (predominantly) rust.  My sister, Sandy, weighed 98 pounds soaking wet at the time, and stepped through the front floorboard.  It was one rough-looking car, but it carried many friends around Augusta, to and from church, to the drive-in and summer theatre rehearsals.  Sherry (Pickard) Kincaid My first car was a gray 1950 Chevy; and one day, as I was taking some cream from our dairy to town to sell, I popped the car into 2nd gear and spun around a corner.  I was pretty impressed with myself, until I realized the cream had spilled all over the floor board!  Besides having to pay my parents for the lost cream, I never could get rid of that smell until the day we sold the car!  The moral of this story:  NO USE CRYING OVER SPILLED MILK (OR CREAM IN MY CASE)!
